Helpful tips on how to create a cheap christmas decoration

By Maria Neilson

December is nearing, and you might be contemplating cheap Christmas decoration ideas. The best christmas decorating ideas don't have to be expensive, but they can make a huge difference to any home and help share the Christmas spirit. Christmas craft magazines are a good source of ideas like using greenery, pinecones and other nature finds in your home this Christmas.

There’s nothing better or more fun than decorating for the holiday season. And if you’re like most people, your favorite holiday for decorating the home is Christmas. For many people, the more decorations – the better. For some families, being able to afford lavish and serene Christmas decorations is a bit of a challenge. There are lots of ways to decorate for Christmas, or any holiday, on a limited budget.

Trying to find a cheap Christmas decoration isn’t always easy. Then again, it doesn’t have to be that difficult either. The best way to get some quick low cost Christmas decorations is to let your children use their imagination and create some. Suddenly, with some construction paper, scissors and glitter, your children can make snowflakes come to life and transform any room in the house. Handpainted snowflakes can be plastered all over windows as well, giving a sense of youth and fun for some decorations. Don’t have any children? You can relive your youth and create some snowflakes on your own. Christmas decorations are so much better when you can make them yourself.

There are lots of ways to create a cheap Christmas decoration. You can always use the same decorations year after year and save yourself quite a bit of money. While it may sound wonderful to get new décor each and every year, that isn’t always feasible. However, if you don’t want your house to appear the same as the previous year, switch some decorations around. Use the decorations from one room and switch them with another room. One year, you can choose to focus on Santa Claus’ workshop when making the Christmas decorations; the following year, you can choose the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Another cheap Christmas decoration idea is to use artificial flowers, dried flowers, handmade wreaths or christmas trees. Sure, live poinsettias and flowers look brilliant for décor, but, they can become rather expensive. You can easily head to a discount arts and crafts store and get some individual silk flowers, festive stockings and boots to make your own creations. You can make your own wreath for a fraction of the cost at a retail store. And, it’ll last longer than the live ones that only last for several weeks.

As you walk into any store around the Thanksgiving holiday you will see Christmas decorations of all sorts coming from everywhere. Christmas tree ornaments including stars, wreaths, ribbons, bulbs, ornaments, statues, and hand-crafted work can all be found at cheap prices in dollar stores, second hand stores and online at websites such as eBay. Everyone who celebrates Christmas appreciates unique and beautiful holiday ornaments, and because of this, they also make great Christmas gifts.

Each year when the holiday season comes around most families will decorate the home with traditional and festive adornments. Perhaps the traditional snowman is on the way out, but the Air Blown Christmas Decoration snowman will always be there to take some joy in the winter months, even as they turn more and more spring-like. I have seen yards that have several moving optical reindeer surrounding a traditionally lighted Christmas tree. These can be purchased rather inexpensively and can be bought over time. Whether inflatables or more traditional ornaments, outdoor Christmas decorations offer cheer at the time of year we need it most and should not be overlooked.

Saving Christmas cards from previous years or making them on your computer can make for some cheap Christmas decorations as well. Cut out the pretty pictures and scenes from the cards. You can glue them onto plain paper and cut them out. You can create artistic centerpieces and tablecloths with them. If you use your imagination, there are lots of ways to create a cheap Christmas decoration, or decorations for any holidays.

Head to a department store and cruise through the aisles of decorations for items that are on sale. Study items you see in stores to get ideas on what you could make at a fraction of the cost. Once you get some ideas of what you want and like, put some time and creativity into decorating. Find some holiday books at the public library and copy some of their projects. Just remember – whatever you create, cherish it, take care of it by storing it properly and keep it for years to come.
